Between the late 1980s and early 1990s, Edyie Porpa was instrumental in bringing indexers together as a group. That group, numbering between 7 and 10, comprised both indexers she knew personally and those whom she learned about through her ASI membership. Hannah Huse and Ingrid Becher were among that early group, serving in leadership positions along with others.

Together, the informal group discussed indexing and invited speakers, and had a close association with the Rocky Mountain Publishing Professionals Guild (www.rmppg.org) that is ongoing.

After encouragement from the national ASI and with the funds that came with affiliation, the group decided to become a formal chapter and was formally acknowledged in 1994. With the support that came from the ASI, participation in the group doubled and sometimes tripled. The first fall conference with invited speakers was held around 1996, and has held a special place in the chapter activities ever since.
